The Community Farm

One big plot, everyone's harvest. No fences between beds, no waiting list for a plot of your own, because the whole farm is yours to work.

A communal endeavor

Most community gardens divide their land into little rented rectangles. Ours works the other way: the Spiral Gardens Community Farm is one big plot that everyone plants, tends, and harvests together. It sits across from the Nursery entrance on Oregon Street, behind the Sacramento Street storefronts, on land that used to be a railroad.

The Farm grows food, and none of it is for sale. The harvest is shared among the volunteers who grow it, brought to the low-income senior residents in the apartments next door, and given to neighborhood folks who need it. Every year, volunteer hands plant and harvest at least a ton of produce. We also test-plant new food varieties to see what truly works in our corner of the Bay, and what we learn ends up on the Nursery tables.

Come dig in

Farm volunteering happens on clear-weather Sundays, 1 to 5pm. There's no signup, no minimum commitment, and no experience needed; drop in once or make it your Sunday ritual. We especially love seeing neighbors from the blocks around the garden, and everyone is welcome: you'll learn as you work, and you'll share in what we harvest.

What to bring

  • Clothes that can get dirty
  • Water
  • Sun protection
  • Tools and gloves are here

Rainy Sunday? The Farm rests. Check the banner on any page of this site, or get The Weekend List and we'll tell you Thursday.
